Explanations

The puzzle was a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. In clue order, the first 19 asterisked clues phonetically gave the surnames of the actors who have played the Doctor thus far:

heart + knell => HARTNELL
trout + tonne => TROUGHTON
per + twee => PERTWEE
bay + cur => BAKER
davy + son => DAVISON
BAKER already given
muck + coy => MCCOY
mug + ann => MCGANN
eckle + stun => ECCLESTON
ten + ant => TENNANT
smith => SMITH

The final two asterisked clues were missing the words CAP and ALDI respectively, yielding the next actor to play the part (Peter) Capaldi.
DOCTOR appeared backwards across the second row: PARROT CODPIECE.
TARDIS appeared in the penultimate row: LODESTAR DISMAY.
