I have to admit that if I'm pressed for time, I usually use online solvers - but it's much more satisfying to do things by hand and know that you actually understand what it is that you are doing.
It seems pretty pointless to me to decode a chunk of Binary, Base64, Vigenere or whatever if you have no idea how or why it works. And things like cryptograms are often best decoded by hand in any case - the online solvers often leave a lot to be desired, particularly as they don't work unless the word spacing is provided.
