It's been mentioned here and there (and everywhere) that this board needs some different smilies.

Stretham has questioned multiple times about who will step up to the plate on it.

So, I guess that begs the question... Are you looking for completely, new and original, custom-made smilies for the board? If so, I won't be any help.

If you're just looking for something different from the php crudola over there, I will certainly be happy to help search and post the better ones I find here. As I'm usre others will, too.

Just let us know. And any other guidelines you have for what you want in the smilies.

I always think that to make the site totally unique then you need custom smilies.

I found this site the other night and had a quick scoot, but if anybody is graphically capable then it would be great to see some individuality here. One of the things I liked about the Donkster was the images.

And we all know how much I hate animated smilies, so please have a little mercy.

Here is a sample of my style of smilies. If you like them, I can make more. So post any comments, suggestions, requests, etc. and I'll see what I can do.

Fantastic - go for it Falcon. If anyone else wants to suggest a smiley idea to Falcon also go ahead. Actually you could do worse than look at Murphyz for ideas... whoops did I say that out loud? Don't worry he's not looking... quick everyone hide. Very Happy

Good job,

Can you save one of them on it's own as a transparent gift and matt it into this colour background to see how it looks?

And it's probably a good idea for you guys to decide on whether you're having a dark or light theme for the site (please say light) so that the smilies can be saved appropriately Smile

I'll first try to complete the full set, then i'll give it a transparent background. Planned so far:

basic smile
big smile
need sleep/coffee (may not make it)
angry
the one with the ~ mouth
sunglasses
cry
sick
lighbulb
pray
einstein (may not make it)
question mark
thumbs up
sad
amazed
gun to head
sleep
wink
tongue
shame
devil
holy
zipped mouth
joker

What I also wanna know: what size do you guys want 'em? So far they're 19x19 and 19x30 for the bigger ones. Is that ok or do you want them bigger (Murphyz-style) or smaller (which will be hard to do while keeping detail)? And ofcourse, any suggestions can be posted.

Right, here's the full set so far. The gun to head and joker aren't there yet, they need a bigger width than 19px. Anyway, enjoy.

Very nice, FalconNL. Good job.

And I think the size is fine. Any bigger and they'll screw with the test line spacing too much and be annoying.

Ditto what Tah said. One more you could add is a big cheesy grin with teeth showing. And many many thanks for all your graphical efforts Falcon.

I wasn't happy with the level of detail yet so I made some 32x32 ones in the train this morning. True, they will mess with the text, but so do Murphyz. I just like high-detail smilies which you can also see on high monitor resolutions. Judge for yourself which ones you like better:

And no thanks needed. Making smilies is fun! Very Happy

Personally I prefer the small ones (and that's not just cos of the bandwidth problem, oh no... honest). What do others think?

Speaking of bandwidth, there's a strong possibility that we'll use the current storage as a test site then move over to Lunar (considerably cheaper!) for the real thing. This isn't really likely to affect anyone much (we'll be keeping the domain name) except that there may be a short period when things are not stable.

I think the larger ones are really great - but for a forum like this, I think the smaller ones are more appropriate. It's true that the ones on Murphyz still mess with the line spacing a bit, but he asked Wendy to make them a little smaller for that very reason when she first designed them - so perhaps we should learn from that experience.

Smaller, please. Smilies are great fun, but they really are secondary to the text. At least IMO.
