30 = 4! + 4 + 4 - sqrt(4)
31 = ((4! / .4) + sqrt(4)) / sqrt(4)
32 = 4! + sqrt(4) + sqrt(4) + 4
33 = 4! + 4 + (sqrt(4) / .4)
34 = 4! + (4! / sqrt(4)) - sqrt(4)
35 = ((4 * 4) - sqrt(4)) / .4
36 = 4! + 4 + 4 + 4
I think factorial is okay, but I agree on the dodginess of the decimal point. But I struggled to find anything for 31 without it. _________________ Puzzletome - Confusion now hath made his masterpiece! |

The little problem with 58 has been corrected.
Therefore, your latest Updated Solving List is:
1 = (4+4)/(4+4)
2 = (4/4)+(4/4)
3 = (4+4+4)/4
4 = sqrt(4*4)*(4/4)
5 = (4x4 + 4) / 4
6 = (4! / 4) + 4 - 4
7 = (4+4) - (4/4)
8 = 4 + 4 + 4 - 4
9 = 4/.4 - 4/4
10 = 4/.4 + 4 – 4
11 = (4! / sqrt(4)) - (4 / 4)
12 = (4 x 4) - sqrt(4) - sqrt(4)
13 = (4! / sqrt(4)) + (4 / 4)
14 = (4 x 4) - 4 + sqrt(4)
15 = (4 x 4) - (4 / 4)
16 = 4 + 4 + 4 + 4
17 = (4 x 4) + (4 / 4)
18 = (4! / sqrt(4)) + 4 + sqrt(4)
19 = 4! - 4 - (4 / 4)
20 = ((4! x 4) / 4) – 4
21 = 4! - 4 + (4 / 4)
22 = (4 x 4) + 4 + sqrt(4)
23 = 4! - ((4 / 4) ^ 4)
24 = 4! - 4 + sqrt(4) + sqrt(4)
25 = 4! + ((4 / 4) ^ 4)
26 = 4! + sqrt(4) + 4 – 4
27 = 4! + sqrt(4) + (4 / 4)
28 = 4! + 4 + 4 - 4
29 = 4! + 4 + (4 / 4)
51 = (4!-sqrt(4))/.4 – 4
52 = 4! + 4! + sqrt(4) + sqrt(4)
53 = (4!-sqrt(4))/.4 - sqrt(4)
54 = (4!-4)/.4 + 4
56 = 4! + 4! + 4 + 4
57 = (4!-sqrt(4))/.4 + sqrt(4)
58=4!/.4 - 4/SQRT(4)
59 = 4!/.4 - 4/4
60 = [(4x4) x 4] – 4
That's 38 down, and just 22 to go!
Keep 'em comin'! _________________ VoyagerKing |

The ink on my posts barely dry, before I have to rush to do another one, he falsely complained!
Expressions for 30 thru 36 are now added to the list.
Therefore, your latest Updated Solving List is:
1 = (4+4)/(4+4)
2 = (4/4)+(4/4)
3 = (4+4+4)/4
4 = sqrt(4*4)*(4/4)
5 = (4x4 + 4) / 4
6 = (4! / 4) + 4 - 4
7 = (4+4) - (4/4)
8 = 4 + 4 + 4 - 4
9 = 4/.4 - 4/4
10 = 4/.4 + 4 – 4
11 = (4! / sqrt(4)) - (4 / 4)
12 = (4 x 4) - sqrt(4) - sqrt(4)
13 = (4! / sqrt(4)) + (4 / 4)
14 = (4 x 4) - 4 + sqrt(4)
15 = (4 x 4) - (4 / 4)
16 = 4 + 4 + 4 + 4
17 = (4 x 4) + (4 / 4)
18 = (4! / sqrt(4)) + 4 + sqrt(4)
19 = 4! - 4 - (4 / 4)
20 = ((4! x 4) / 4) – 4
21 = 4! - 4 + (4 / 4)
22 = (4 x 4) + 4 + sqrt(4)
23 = 4! - ((4 / 4) ^ 4)
24 = 4! - 4 + sqrt(4) + sqrt(4)
25 = 4! + ((4 / 4) ^ 4)
26 = 4! + sqrt(4) + 4 – 4
27 = 4! + sqrt(4) + (4 / 4)
28 = 4! + 4 + 4 - 4
29 = 4! + 4 + (4 / 4)
30 = 4! + 4 + 4 - sqrt(4)
31 = ((4! / .4) + sqrt(4)) / sqrt(4)
32 = 4! + sqrt(4) + sqrt(4) + 4
33 = 4! + 4 + (sqrt(4) / .4)
34 = 4! + (4! / sqrt(4)) - sqrt(4)
35 = ((4 * 4) - sqrt(4)) / .4
36 = 4! + 4 + 4 + 4
51 = (4!-sqrt(4))/.4 – 4
52 = 4! + 4! + sqrt(4) + sqrt(4)
53 = (4!-sqrt(4))/.4 - sqrt(4)
54 = (4!-4)/.4 + 4
56 = 4! + 4! + 4 + 4
57 = (4!-sqrt(4))/.4 + sqrt(4)
58=4!/.4 - 4/SQRT(4)
59 = 4!/.4 - 4/4
60 = [(4x4) x 4] – 4
You’re 3/4 of the way there! Neat! _________________ VoyagerKing |

46 = 4! x sqrt(4) - sqrt(4) GRRRRRRR
47 = 4! x sqrt(4) - (4/4)
48 = 4! x sqrt(4) x (4/4)
49 = 4! x sqrt(4) + (4/4)
50 = 4!/.4 - 4/.4

The recent post for 46:
46 = 4! x sqrt(4) - sqrt(4)
will not fly, as it only uses 3 4s. Please correct and try again.
But, 4 new entries, for 47 thru 50 are good.
Therefore, your latest Updated Solving List is:
1 = (4+4)/(4+4)
2 = (4/4)+(4/4)
3 = (4+4+4)/4
4 = sqrt(4*4)*(4/4)
5 = (4x4 + 4) / 4
6 = (4! / 4) + 4 - 4
7 = (4+4) - (4/4)
8 = 4 + 4 + 4 - 4
9 = 4/.4 - 4/4
10 = 4/.4 + 4 – 4
11 = (4! / sqrt(4)) - (4 / 4)
12 = (4 x 4) - sqrt(4) - sqrt(4)
13 = (4! / sqrt(4)) + (4 / 4)
14 = (4 x 4) - 4 + sqrt(4)
15 = (4 x 4) - (4 / 4)
16 = 4 + 4 + 4 + 4
17 = (4 x 4) + (4 / 4)
18 = (4! / sqrt(4)) + 4 + sqrt(4)
19 = 4! - 4 - (4 / 4)
20 = ((4! x 4) / 4) – 4
21 = 4! - 4 + (4 / 4)
22 = (4 x 4) + 4 + sqrt(4)
23 = 4! - ((4 / 4) ^ 4)
24 = 4! - 4 + sqrt(4) + sqrt(4)
25 = 4! + ((4 / 4) ^ 4)
26 = 4! + sqrt(4) + 4 – 4
27 = 4! + sqrt(4) + (4 / 4)
28 = 4! + 4 + 4 - 4
29 = 4! + 4 + (4 / 4)
30 = 4! + 4 + 4 - sqrt(4)
31 = ((4! / .4) + sqrt(4)) / sqrt(4)
32 = 4! + sqrt(4) + sqrt(4) + 4
33 = 4! + 4 + (sqrt(4) / .4)
34 = 4! + (4! / sqrt(4)) - sqrt(4)
35 = ((4 * 4) - sqrt(4)) / .4
36 = 4! + 4 + 4 + 4
47 = 4! x sqrt(4) - (4/4)
48 = 4! x sqrt(4) x (4/4)
49 = 4! x sqrt(4) + (4/4)
50 = 4!/.4 - 4/.4
51 = (4!-sqrt(4))/.4 – 4
52 = 4! + 4! + sqrt(4) + sqrt(4)
53 = (4!-sqrt(4))/.4 - sqrt(4)
54 = (4!-4)/.4 + 4
56 = 4! + 4! + 4 + 4
57 = (4!-sqrt(4))/.4 + sqrt(4)
58=4!/.4 - 4/SQRT(4)
59 = 4!/.4 - 4/4
60 = [(4x4) x 4] – 4
Only 11 more to go. _________________ VoyagerKing |

|
|
I was recently asked, why I posted my little 4 4s challenge.
Well, I've got a Huge collection of puzzles, that I would really like to share. I enjoy seeing others solve puzzles that I have tried, and think are fun and/or interesting.
I think time limits make things more interesting.
I am New here, and I posted my little puzzle to see what kind of reaction it would receive.
Did I break any rules of the site? Should I change the way I post puzzles?
If so, how? (I am allowed to post puzzles, aren't I?)
I hope I answered the question ok, and, would appreciate answers to my questions.
Thanks in advance! _________________ VoyagerKing |

We have more than 30 contests on this site, with more being added all the time - but they all contain original puzzles and not "recycled" puzzles from other sources. If you'd like to try your hand at writing some original material, please feel free to PM me and we'll talk about what is involved.
But in terms of your final question - no, you haven't broken any site rules by posting your teaser here in the General Forum. I'd have deleted your original post if you had...LOL!

Voyager King, This is an enjoyable challenge you've posted here! I'm just reading this thread for the first time today, and it looks as though the collective efforts are in good position to complete the task by Friday. Good job, everyone!
I agree that the use of the decimal is a little dodgy, especially since 9 = 4 + 4 + (4/4) seems much more straightforward. Granted, it perhaps doesn't look as fancy as 4/.4 - 4/4 --- to each his/her own.
Quick question: I didn't see any restriction stating that every 4 has to be separated by at least one operator, so does that mean the following are valid for your challenge?
43 = 44 - 4 / 4
44 = 44 - 4 + 4
45 = 44 + 4/4

Expressions for 37,38,40,42,43,44,45,and 46 have been solved!
Therefore, your Updated Solving List is:
1 = (4+4)/(4+4)
2 = (4/4)+(4/4)
3 = (4+4+4)/4
4 = sqrt(4*4)*(4/4)
5 = (4x4 + 4) / 4
6 = (4! / 4) + 4 - 4
7 = (4+4) - (4/4)
8 = 4 + 4 + 4 - 4
9 = 4/.4 - 4/4
10 = 4/.4 + 4 – 4
11 = (4! / sqrt(4)) - (4 / 4)
12 = (4 x 4) - sqrt(4) - sqrt(4)
13 = (4! / sqrt(4)) + (4 / 4)
14 = (4 x 4) - 4 + sqrt(4)
15 = (4 x 4) - (4 / 4)
16 = 4 + 4 + 4 + 4
17 = (4 x 4) + (4 / 4)
18 = (4! / sqrt(4)) + 4 + sqrt(4)
19 = 4! - 4 - (4 / 4)
20 = ((4! x 4) / 4) – 4
21 = 4! - 4 + (4 / 4)
22 = (4 x 4) + 4 + sqrt(4)
23 = 4! - ((4 / 4) ^ 4)
24 = 4! - 4 + sqrt(4) + sqrt(4)
25 = 4! + ((4 / 4) ^ 4)
26 = 4! + sqrt(4) + 4 – 4
27 = 4! + sqrt(4) + (4 / 4)
28 = 4! + 4 + 4 - 4
29 = 4! + 4 + (4 / 4)
30 = 4! + 4 + 4 - sqrt(4)
31 = ((4! / .4) + sqrt(4)) / sqrt(4)
32 = 4! + sqrt(4) + sqrt(4) + 4
33 = 4! + 4 + (sqrt(4) / .4)
34 = 4! + (4! / sqrt(4)) - sqrt(4)
35 = ((4 * 4) - sqrt(4)) / .4
36 = 4! + 4 + 4 + 4
37 = ((Sqrt(4) + 4!) / Sqrt(4)) + 4!
38 = 4/.4 x 4 - sqrt(4)
39
40 = 4! + (4 + 4) x sqrt(4)
41
42 = (4! * sqrt(4)) - 4 - sqrt(4)
43 = (4! * sqrt(4)) - (sqrt(4) / .4)
44 = ((4 * 4) / .4) + 4
45 = ((4 * 4) + sqrt(4)) / .4
46 = (4! * sqrt(4)) - (4 / sqrt(4))
47 = 4! x sqrt(4) - (4/4)
48 = 4! x sqrt(4) x (4/4)
49 = 4! x sqrt(4) + (4/4)
50 = 4!/.4 - 4/.4
51 = (4!-sqrt(4))/.4 – 4
52 = 4! + 4! + sqrt(4) + sqrt(4)
53 = (4!-sqrt(4))/.4 - sqrt(4)
54 = (4!-4)/.4 + 4
55
56 = 4! + 4! + 4 + 4
57 = (4!-sqrt(4))/.4 + sqrt(4)
58 = 4!/.4 - 4/SQRT(4)
59 = 4!/.4 - 4/4
60 = [(4x4) x 4] – 4
Just 3 expressions remain, namely, those needed for 39, 41, and 55.
I strongly suspect, that they won't remain for long. _________________ VoyagerKing |

Hi BrainBoggler!
I'm glad that you think the puzzle is enjoyable. There is one little problem. It's not my own. Someone gave the puzzle to me years ago, and then, the challenge was only to get to 20!
I did not read all of the critical background on this site, and I just jumped in and posted my little teaser and challenge.
I do have some original puzzles of my own. And I guess I'll have to consider posting some of those, rather than continue to post unoriginal material, no matter how enjoyable it might be.
But enough of that. To answer your question, Yes! You may post expressions such as:
43 = 44 - 4 / 4
44 = 44 - 4 + 4
45 = 44 + 4/4
They don't break any rules of the teaser at all.
There has been a terrific collective effort in solving my puzzle, and in such a short amount of time! I'm impressed!
Thanks for your inquiry BrainBoggler. _________________ VoyagerKing |
