Talking of old favourites, could anyone reproduce the infamous 1.48 here? And I cannot remember clearly, did Owen make some sort of "suggestion" that there was a monetary prize available? I might be misremembering that as I found it hard to believe. I have this vague feeling he was not very reliable at meeting his own promises on when the next riddle would appear. FC

I was pondering my less than complimentary post about Owen and it might be unfair. He had faults but he managed to attract a decent sized audience. The failings were discussed and noted and I think this has helped the current breed of riddle sites handle things better. We have now become used to well designed, unambiguous riddles, that are playtested. I remember one kind soul praying on this to confuse on a particular riddle site. No names mentioned but we know who you are NGK.
Perhaps I should remember Owen as a pioneer and pathfinder whose legacy has been picked up and moved on. After all, I did enjoy it while it lasted.FC

I think the important bit was something like...

U = (CD) + (AB)
U = the answer

The important thing to remember is that it was horribly ambiguous, and that none of the 10/20/however many plausible answers there were actually got accepted! (I'm fairly sure this was deliberate, and it was some kind of scam to keep people interested in the site so the creator could keep getting the advertising money - seriously, there's no way it would have remained unaltered for over a year otherwise...)

there you go FC

Question 1.48

A) I am white's first move in the game of kings I have how many choices?

B) Number of ways of winnings 0s and Xs

C) "As I was going to St. Ives, I met a man with seven wives. Every wife had seven sacks, every sack had seven cats, every cat had seven kitts. Kitts, cats, sacks, wives, how many were going to St. Ives?"

D) How many rings not owned by elves?

U = (CD) + (AB)

U = The answer

Please use BODMAS, also spell your answer, for example 2 would become two. And lastly good luck!

hmmm ... several easy ways to answer this (three hundred thirty-seven, for example, or two thousand one hundred thirty three) but I am curious which ended up being the intended answer?

And therein lies the problem, because an answer was never provided. There were many hundreds of people trying for many weeks on this, including brute forcing it up to many thousands, and since no one ever got the 'answer' I think we can safely assume that there never was one.
